Fall of the Leafe

I don't know what an
August Wernicke is (sounds like something out of a
fairy tale), nor am I sure what direction this band is taking. Their
music fuses elements of death metal, power metal, and progressive rock.
The death metal is mainly in the singing, although singer T. Tuominen
does some "real" singing in places, and there are spots where
they play
at death metal speeds. The rest of the music, however, has more in
common with power and progressive metal. Much of the guitar riffing is
definitely power metal, and they use some double-bass drumming. There is
also Dream Theatre-style keyboards and arrangements, and they use
classical style guitar in some songs, too. Some of the guitar melodies
reminded me of Running Wild. In fact, two of the songs, "Effloresce
In
Black And White" and "In Morning Wood A
Utopia-Revelation", contain a
lot of Running Wild influence, aside from the death metal vocals.
One other song that caught my ear was the closing track, "Bleak
Picture,
August", in which they use some Celtic style music (albeit done
with
synthesizers) and fuse it with metal. A cool idea! These guys are
talented, and the music is complex, sophisticated, and well executed,
but I think they need to be a bit more focused as to what direction they
want to go in musically. They different styles of metal they use tend to
clash.
